Class 4 Impact-Resistant Shingles for Midwest Hail
In high-frequency hail markets, upgrading during a covered replacement often costs less than people expect and pays back through premium credits.
Short answer
Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are the highest rating under the UL 2218 steel ball impact test, meaning the shingle survives a two-inch steel ball dropped from twenty feet without cracking the mat. Many insurers offer premium discounts for Class 4 roofs, and the discount is largest in high-hail states such as Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and the Dakotas.
What the rating means
Class 4 is the top tier of UL 2218, an impact test in which steel balls of increasing diameter are dropped onto the shingle from a set height. A Class 4 shingle withstands a two-inch ball from twenty feet without the mat cracking on the back side. That is a laboratory test with a steel ball rather than a hailstone, so it is a proxy rather than a guarantee, but it is a meaningful one and it is the standard insurers use.
Where the upgrade makes sense
The math is strongest in the high-frequency corridor - Kansas, Nebraska, the Dakotas, western Missouri and Iowa - where the probability of another damaging event within the roof's life is high and carriers offer the largest premium credits. It is weaker in lower-frequency markets like Duluth or the Cleveland lakeshore. The single best moment to upgrade anywhere is during a covered replacement, because tear-off, labor, underlayment and disposal are already being paid for and your incremental cost is only the material difference.
What it does not do
A Class 4 roof is not hailproof. Very large stones will still damage one, and the shingle can still lose granules cosmetically. What it reliably does is raise the threshold at which the mat fractures, which is the damage that actually shortens a roof's life. It also does nothing about wind-driven damage to soft metals - your gutters, vents and AC fins will dent the same as before.
Getting the insurance credit
The credit is not automatic. You have to notify your carrier, provide documentation of the product installed and its UL 2218 Class 4 certification, and in some cases supply photographs or the manufacturer's certificate. We provide that paperwork on every impact-resistant installation, but you have to send it in. Homeowners routinely pay for the upgrade and then never claim the discount.

We will tell you when it is not worth it
Class 4 shingles are a genuine upgrade in the high-frequency Plains markets and a marginal one in parts of the region that rarely see damaging hail. We price both options on every estimate and we say plainly which way the math leans for your address. Selling an upgrade that does not pay back is a short-term way to run a roofing company, and this one has been in the same family since 1947.
