Storm Damage Roof Repair

This matters more than most homeowners realize. Hail bruises the shingle mat and knocks granules loose in a random scatter. Wind creases tabs, breaks the seal strip, lifts shingles along the rakes and ridges, and tears them off outright. Many policies treat wind and hail under a combined deductible but adjust the damage separately, and a scope written for hail alone will leave wind damage unrepaired. We document both on every storm inspection because Midwest storms almost never deliver one without the other.

A shingle is held down partly by nails and partly by a heat-activated adhesive strip that bonds it to the course below. Strong wind can break that bond without visibly moving the shingle. The tab lays back down and looks fine from the ground, but it is no longer sealed, and the next wind event takes it. Broken seal strips are one of the most commonly missed forms of storm damage and one of the easiest to verify by hand on the roof.

Every penetration through a roof is a potential leak, and storms find them. Pipe boots crack and split under hail and UV exposure. Step flashing along a wall gets lifted by wind. Chimney counter-flashing pulls loose from the mortar joint. Skylight seals fail. On any storm repair we work every penetration, because replacing a slope of shingles while reusing a cracked twelve-year-old pipe boot guarantees a callback.

Isolated storm damage on one slope of a sound roof is a repair, and we will do it as a repair. The complication is matching: shingle colors change over production runs and a discontinued product may be unavailable entirely, so a repair on a fifteen-year-old roof can leave a visible patch. That is where the matching question enters the claim, and in several Midwest states the standard favors the homeowner more than carriers initially propose.
